Location: City centre, close to Zocalo.

Room: Tiny balcony. Some simple furniture. Paint peeling off in bathroom.

Other: Make bed. Warm water.

Overall: OK. Great location, relatively cheap.

Hostel Paulina: Trujano 321. reservations@paulinahostel.com

Location: City centre, three squares west of Zocalo.

Rates: Dorm: 75, w/o bath: 180/180/270. 10 off with student card (MXN, September 2003).

Room: Dorms have 9 beds w/ private lockers.

Other: New and very clean. English speaking staff.

Overall: Good place. Cheap and clean.

Bungalow Acuario: Playa Zicatela

Location: Middle of Playa Zicatela. Right by the beach. Close to everything.

Rates:  Room: 120/150. Large w/fridge: 150/180. (MXN, September 2003).

Room: Large w/ fridge. Roof and standing fan.

Other: Internet, gym and pool. Clean room every day.

Overall: Recommended. Great atmosphere! Great pool!

Magic Hostel: Guadalupe Victoria 47

Location: 5 minutes walk west from Zocalo.

Rates:  Dorm: 40, Double room w/o bath: 80/100 (MXN, September 2003).

Room: Simple room with large beds. Tick blankets.

Other: Large square where people meet, kitchen, cold to walk to the bath at night.

Overall: Good place. Cheap, great atmosphere.

Margarita & Ed Cabanas: El Panchan, edcabanas@yahoo.com

Location: El Panchan, a selection of hostels, 1.7km from the city, 4.4km from the ruins.

Rates: Cabanas: 120/135, Rooms: 130/150 (MXN, September 2003).

Room: Nice room with some furniture and a standing fan.

Other: Inside forest. Pool with no water. Cold shower. Nice restaurants.

Overall: Good place. Beautiful area with great atmosphere.

Hotel Casa Tucan: Calle 4 between Av 10 and 15, casatucan@playadelcarmen.com

Location: 2 blocks north-west from the beach.

Rates:  Double w/ bath: 230, w/o bath: 180 (MXN, September 2003).

Room: Really nice rooms. Cozy. Nice furniture and bathroom.

Other: Pool. Hot shower. Clean. Fresh towel animal every day!

Overall: Very nice rooms! A bit expensive, but so are all the rooms in PdC. Good value.

Hotel Saolima: AR Salas 260, San Miguel.

Location: 2 blocks east from the waterfont in the centre of San Miguel.

Rates:  Room: 180, Dormitory: 100 (MXN, September 2003)

Room: Large, but basic room. Ceiling fan (some are noisy).

Other:

Overall: One of the cheapest rooms in Cozumel.

Urban Hostel: 10 avenida between calles 4 & 6. urbanhostel@yahoo.com

Location: 2 blocks north-west from the beach.

Rates:  Double w/ bath: 200 (MXN, October 2003).

Room: Tiny room with mattress on the floor. No roof, so could be noisy and difficult to adjust light.

Other: Breakfast (Coffee, juice, bread, butter/jam). Kitchen facilities. Nice lounge with TV. Ok shared bathroom.

Overall: Could be nice, but bad value for money (even though it is one of the cheapest places in PdC).

Cristal Hotel: Cristobal Colon 207.

Location: Close to the marked. North in the centre (good, as bus station is north).

Rates:  Double w/ bath: 150 (MXN, October 2003).

Room: Saggy bed. Ceiling fan.

Other: Hotel looks like a mix between a car park and a prison cell block!

Overall: Nice location. OK.

The Tropics Hotel :

Location: By the beach. Sea view.

Rates:  Room w/ bath: 30/35 (BZD, October 2003).

Room: Ok room.

Other: Shower water is not warm and is a mixture of fresh and salt water. Sun terrace. Sea view.

Overall: One of the nicest places on the island.

Mirador del Lago: C 15 de Septiembre

Location: Lake access. Flores is so small, so it does not matter where you stay.

Rates:  Double w/ bath: 80 (GTQ, October 2003).

Room: Dark room. Saggy bed. Floor fan.

Other: Nice lake view and a jetty to swim from.

Overall: Ok. The rooms in the upper floors are probably better.

Hotel Garifuna:

Location: North of the central, close to the (nasty) beach.

Rates:  Double w/ bath: 65 (GTQ, October 2003).

Room: Nice rooms with floor fan, but very hot.

Other: Good lock on door. Staff would not give us key before we paid.

Overall: Ok.

Hotel Mar Azul: Ave La Republica entre 2 y 5 calle, hotelmarazul@caribe.hn

Location: 5 min north from Parque Central.

Rates:  Double w/ bath: 160, Double w/o bath: 100 (HNL, October 2003).

Room: Basic. Two floor fan. scary looking ceiling fan.

Other: Cable TV w/ Movie Channel. Bit shabby shared bathrooms.

Overall: Recommended. Cheap room with cable TV.

Coopers Inn:

Location: 5 min west of the pier.

Rates:  Double w/o bath: 120 (HNL, October 2003).

Room: Basic room with roof fan.

Other: Kitchen. Swamp view (breeding ground for mosquitoes / sand flies). Rooster.

Overall: Not that nice, but one of the cheaper alternatives.

Hotel San Carlos

Location: At junction to Copan Ruinas.

Rates:  Double w/ bath: 200 (HNL, October 2003).

Room: Very nice room. Nice furniture. Picture on wall. Bed lamp.

Other: Cable TV w/ remote. Pool.

Overall: Relatively expensive, but still great value for money.

Hospedaje Los Gemelos: maricela@hondutel.hn

Location: Between the Parque Central and the bridge to the Copan site.

Rates:  Double w/o bath: 100 (HNL, October 2003).

Room: Very basic. Floor fan.

Other: Friendly staff. Ok shared bathrooms.

Overall: Friendly, basic and cheap.

La Retiro

Location: 15 min walking outside the village centre.

Rates:  Dorm: 25, Double w/o bath: 70, Double w/ bath: 140 (GTQ, October 2003).

Room: Really nice room with soul. Nice furniture.

Other: Beautiful lake view. Hammock outside. Cozy restaurant w/ only vegetarian food. Tube rental.

Overall: Recommended! With better weather and meat in the restaurant everything would be perfect.

Casa de Santa Lucia No 4: Alameda Sta lucia Sur 4.

Location: One block north of bus station. 4 blocks north west of Plaza Mayor.

Rates:  Double w/ bath: 100 (GTQ, October 2003).

Room: Saggy bed. The rooms on the ground floor is a bit dark and noisy at times.

Other: Hot water only: 6-9 and 18-21. Roof terrace with nice view.

Overall: Ok. Nice rooms, but a bit dark.

Hospedaje Casa Elena:

Location: 5 min north of the pier. Turn left.

Rates:  Double w/ bath: 60 (GTQ, October 2003).

Room: Nice light blue colors. Cozy rooms.

Other: Beautiful view of the lake. Jetty for sunbathing and swimming. Terrace with tables, chairs, hammocks.

Overall: Recommended. Excellent setting by the lake and nice rooms.

Hotel Occiental: 7C, 12-23

Location: South-West corner of Parque Centro America. Very central.

Rates:  Double w/ bath: 100 (GTQ, October 2003).

Room: Quite big room with nice bed with lots of blankets. No window, lack natural light.

Other: Cable TV. Very good shower (hot water has to be turned on in reception).

Overall: Good value. Central and with cable TV.

Hotel Latino America: 3C Pte Nte 19A, Lotificacion Cofino.

Location: Located in the Latino America Academy language school.

Rates:  Single w/o bath: 40 (GTQ, October 2003).

Room: Small, but quite nice due to decorations on the wall.

Other: Nice terrace. Kitchen facilities (5 GTQ) and free pure water.

Overall: Ok.

Apartment: Rue Xavier da Silveria 40. Call Enrique: 2247-6350 / 9206-9262.

Location: Copacabana. 50m from the beach. Close to Othon Palace.

Rates: Six people, 2 weeks: 6000 (BRL, February 2004 - Carnaval)

Room: Large 4 room apartment. Two bathrooms (one toilet only). Large living room.

Other:  TV w/ Brazil channels. Full kitchen.

Overall: Central, but expensive. What the heck, it´s carnaval!

Apartment: Rua Barata Ribeiero 811. Call Enrique: 2247-6350 / 9206-9262.

Location: Copacabana. 2 blocks away from the beach.

Rates: Three people: 120 (BRL, February 2004)

Room: 2 room apartment. Lots of furniture, looks like someone live there.

Other:  TV w/ Brazil channels. Full kitchen.

Overall: Central, good value apartment.

Jorge´s House: Rua Pinto Martins 9, info@brazilhostel.com

Location: Lapa. By the arch, take the funky stairs from Rua Jaquim Silva.

Rates: 25 per person (BRL, March 2004)

Room: Double bed and a fan, nothing more.

Other: Simple breakfast. Ok shared bath. Kitchen facilities. TV room w/ cable. Squeaky bed.

Overall: Overpriced considering the alternatives, but nice if you want to meet other people.

Hotel Marajo: Rua Jaquim Silva 99, Phone: (21) 2224-4134.

Location: Lapa. Close to the arch.

Rates: Single: 35, Double: 40/50 (BRL, March 2004)

Room: Small bed. Small, but nice bathroom. Lots of mirrors.

Other: Good breakfast. Air-con (noisy/cold). Hot showers.

Overall: Not by the beach, but a great alternative for a place to stay in Rio.

Pousada Evelina: Rua Irland Kalichewski 171, pousada.evelina@foznet.com.br

Location: 3.5km from Foz toward the falls. Take the Parque Nacional bus.

Rates: Single: 40, Double: 60 (BRL, March 2004)

Room: Air-con. Hot water. Nice room.

Other: Pool, cozy TV room w/ satellite/VCR/DVD. Kitchen facilities w/ BBQ. Great breakfast! Very friendly.

Overall: Not the cheapest in town, but great value for money still.

Nuevo Hotel Misiones: Av. Victoria Aguirre 304

Location: Very central. Close to everything. 5 min from the bus station.

Rates: 15 per person (ARS, March 2004)

Room: The "single room" was a large room with 3 beds. Simple furniture.

Other: Good shower, once it get started. Simple breakfast included.

Overall: Central and cheap alternative.

Apartment: Angelina Joaquina dos Santos 204.

Location: Barra da Lagoa, 50m from Praia Grande

Rates: One person: 35, Two persons: 40 (BRL, March 2004)

Room:  1 room apartment. Fridge, stove, table, closet.

Other: Ok to check out at 4 pm. Hot water. TV w/ Brazil channels.

Overall: Nice apartment close to the beach at a reasonable price.

Hotel Central: Avenida Sao Joao 288. reservas@hotelcentral.com.br

Location: Very central. Close to metro: Sao Bento (Blue) and Republica (Red).

Rates: Single/Double: 28/39. Cheper w/o bathroom (BRL, March 2004)

Room: Nice room with good furnitures.

Other: Safe in the room. TV. Telephone. Good breakfast. Always fresh towels. Slightly cold shower.

Overall: Good room, service, price and location.

Location: 200m from the ferry. 2km to the beach.

Room: Nice. Bright colors. Roof fan. Pictures on the wall. Nice bathroom.

Other: TV. Large fridge. Cold shower. No cleaning of room.

Overall: Close to ferry, but for this price you can get better deals.

Fred´s Place / Pousada Aquario Suite: aquario@ilhagrande.com

Location: By the water at the end of the beach to the north-east (left from the ferry).

Rates: Double: 50 (BRL, March 2004)

Room: Room with shelves and a funky table. Nice bathroom.

Other: Good breakfast. Free laundry. Free water sport rental. Room w/ TV/video. Nice area with salt water "pool" and beach chairs. Very hot shower (most of the times).

Overall: Cool place, slightly outside the centre.

Location: Close to the stadium. About 5min to Praia Dos Anjos and the centre.

Rates: Double: 88, Low season discount: 50 (BRL, April 2004)

Room: Large room. Balcony. TV. Nice bathroom. Hot shower. Roof fan. Hard bed.

Other: Great breakfast! Pool. Sauna. Common room w/ satellite TV and pool table.

Overall: Great value in low season!
