If you think that they play excellent music on the radio and that Metallica is "just noise", this is probably NOT the page for you! If you do like music with feeling, energy and aggression, you should check this out...

| Death (USA) | The Sound of Perseverance | Death Metal |
2001 |
|
|
The genre Death Metal was named after this band and I seriously doubt that this cd will ever be matched. Death has really always been a solo project by Chuck Schuldiner, with help from some of metal's best musicians. Chuck tragically passed away from cancer in 2002. R.I.P.

2001 |

|
The only band in the top 5 that have a chance of succeeding the mentioned album (...judging by the last albums of Samael/Metallica and as LoA/Death does not exist any more)!

2003 |
|
|
The only change I have made to the list since it's creation. Katatonia get better and better with every album and their last offering was no exception. Starting as a doom/death metal Katatonia has evolved into the leading force within melancholic metal/rock. Every release has gone softer than the last, but this trend has changed with the new cd. Many mainstream listeners are also missing out on something here...

Fanzines
Scream Magazine: The best metal magazine in Norway
S.O.D. (Sounds Of Death): Extreme metal zine.
Norwegian bands
Artch: Power metal. The first cd rocks!
Bethzaida: Black/death metal with flute.
Blood Red Throne:
Death metal.
Borknagar: Melodic black metal.
Cadaver: Classic death metal band that was newly reunited under the name
Cadaver Inc.
Carpathian Forest: Raw black metal with the most ridiculous cover booklets
ever.
Conception:
Power metal. I like only the self-financed debut album.
Dark Throne: Bit too grim
Black Metal in my ears, but the first death metal
album is good.
Dimmu Borgir: Kind of a super group after recruitment of some of the best
musicians in the black metal scene.
Disiplin: Black Metal.
Emperor: Epic black metal.
Equinox:
The world's most underrated thrash metal band. The first two albums are
classics!
Extol: Technical Christian
death metal.
Green
Carnation: Dark metal. The previous cd has one track that lasts for 70 minutes,
without getting boring.
Immortal: Grim black metal. Prefer the latest album.
Lowdown: Agressive
metal ala Pantera.
Minas Tirith: Death metal ballads would give a good explanation for many of
their songs.
Old Man's Child: Catchy symphonic black metal.
Paradigma: Gothic death metal.
Peccantum: Weird project from Ihsahn (Emperor) and his wife.
Ram-Zet: Technical black/death metal with
female vocals and a violin.
Red Harvest: Thrash metal band from the Bootleg days that now play industrial
metal.
Satyricon: The only black metal band on radio P3's (Norway) playlist.
Sirenia: The new band of ex-Tristania member, and it is easy to hear. The cd
is actually better than the last from Tristania.
The 3rd and the Mortal: The original female vocals metal band. The first two
releases are great! ...the following are not.
The Kovenant: The music (Black metal -> Industrial metal) changed with the
name (Covenant -> The Kovenant).
The Sins of Thy
Beloved: "Beauty and the Beast" band with effective use of violin.
Theatre of Tragedy: Was my favorite "Beauty and the Beast" band,
but the new
album is more pop than metal! Urk!
Trail of Tears: "Beauty and the Beast" band with soprano vocals
Tristania: "Beauty and the Beast" band with effective choir samplings.
Winds: Progressive metal mixed with classical music.
Other bands
Forgotten Silence: Dark metal from the Czech Republic.
Plahn: Death metal from Thailand. Singer is DJ at Immortal Bar in Bangkok (pics).
